Tour of Jewish New Orleans sites

Leadership from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans and the Jewish Federation of Baton Rouge were escorted into New Orleans on Saturday for an inspection of several Jewish institutions, and to retrieve Torahs from places where they were kept during the storm.

The group looked at the structures of Temple Sinai, Touro Synagogue, Hillel at Tulane University, Shir Chadash and the Goldring-Woldenberg Jewish Community Campus. Others had already inspected the St. Charles Avenue JCC, Gates of Prayer and the Chabad Houses.

Institutions in the Uptown area did not have flood or structural damage. Metairie-area institutions such as Shir Chadash, Gates of Prayer and the Jewish Community Campus all have some outer damage and flooding on the first floor.

The group was unable to inspect Beth Israel, because it is in an area that is still under water and inaccessible.
