Mega Challah Bake 250 being organized in New Orleans

By popular demand, the Women’s Mega Challah Bake returns for the first time since the pandemic.

Chabad and Hadassah New Orleans invite all women in the community to an evening of unity and inspiration, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at Shir Chadash in Metairie.

Previous Mega Challah Bakes took place in 2017 and 2019. Organizers anticipate about 250 at this event.

Each woman will experience making Challah at her own seat, including forming the dough and shaping it. There will be a dinner and wine bar, and each participant will receive a personalized event apron.

This year, there will also be a “Challah Wars” competition as some New Orleans challah experts compete for the title of Challah Queen. But for the bake itself, no experience is needed, and the event is for women and girls in high school and up.

The evening will include a Women of Light display, honoring “lamplighters who spread light, goodness and kindness.” There will be a photo and short dedication for each woman. Illuminators are for a mother, grandmother, mentor, sister, colleague or friend. Shining Lights are for the next generation.

For the display, one dedication and one registration for the evening are $118. Three dedications and one registration are $180, additional dedications are $50.

Co-sponsors include Anshe Sfard, Chabad Grads and Young Professionals, Beth Israel, Cteen, Gates of Prayer, the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Day School, Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, JNola, NCJW New Orleans, Slater Torah Academy, Jewish Preschool of the Arts and the Shir Chadash Sisterhood.

Registration is open here. Early-bird tickets may be purchased for $36 through Feb. 22, after which ticket prices increase to $45. There is a special discounted ticket rate of $25 for those under 30.
